YSA Sailor of the Year - Honour Board

Sailor of the Year - Honour Board

The YSA Sailor of the Year Trophy is named in honour of Tom Flint.

It is very worthy that the name of Tom Flint should be remembered in this way. Tom was a great character both physically and mentally, an enthusiastic sailor and a yachting administrator; both hard working and dedicated at all levels.

Tom’s foresight, and dedication to promote sailing in the 1940’s helped found Yachting SA and set this Association’s goals to advance sailing in this State and encourage our sailors and officials to play and officiate in our sport Nationally and on the World scene.

Tom Flint played an important role in sailing for many years. His more prominent roles included:

  • A founding member of the SA Yacht Racing Assoc. in 1946 and the Association’s first Secretary.
  • Tom was President of the SA Yacht Racing Assoc. from 1958 to 1963.
  • A member of Yachting SA Racing Rules Committee holding the qualification of ISAF International Judge.
  • He was South Australian Delegate to the Australian Yachting Federation and an AYF Vice President and President.
  • Past Commodore of the Royal SA Yacht Squadron and the Somerton Yacht Club.
  • A supporter of junior sailing and the International Cadet Class in particular.
  • A Life Member of the SA Dragon Class, and,
  • In 1972, Tom was awarded Life Membership of Yachting SA.
