Yacht club goes fishing

Published Wed 10 Jun 2020

Want free membership to the club? Do you hold a Recreational Skippers Ticket? If you answered yes, then you’re in luck.

Regional sailing club, Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club this week cast their membership net in a bold move to attract new blood to their ranks. As we all know volunteers are the lifeblood of our clubs, this is especially important in our regions. DBYC is offering several complimentary memberships to locals that hold skippers’ tickets and are interested in being part of the racing and training program.

DBYC is offering five men and women Full Ordinary Membership (typically $300 per annum) for volunteering on race days during the 2020/2021 sailing season. “We take safety very seriously at DBYC, which means putting support boats on the water when our Juniors and Seniors are competing or simply enjoying a club-sanctioned sail,” said DBYC Commodore Peter Hales.

“Volunteering on the support boats is a great way to get involved with sailing, be on the water over the summer and be a valued part of our small community,” Mr Hales continued.

Peter concluded by saying “It’s a classic chicken and egg situation. Without support boat volunteers, there is no sailing, and vice versa.”

Many of the club’s current roster of volunteers are not sailors, but rather friends of the club who enjoy the camaraderie, the sense of involvement with an organised water sport and simply being out on boats. The club operates several RIB-style power boats as its support fleet and is hoping to attract the new volunteer members over winter, ready for the season beginning in November.

“A lot of people don’t even know we’re here,” Commodore Hales said. “We’re a small, highly inclusive club that draws from a very wide cross-section of the community. Our licensed premises offer the only water-frontage spot for a cold beer or a glass of Margaret River wine anywhere in Dunsborough.”

DBYC is well sheltered from the blustery arctic winds and waves by Cape Naturaliste making it an ideal location for the upcoming summer season.

Anyone interested in this special opportunity should contact DBYC Commodore Peter Hales on 0428 389 370.
