World Sailing Conference announcements

Published Tue 19 Nov 2019

The recent World Sailing Conference held in Bermuda featured several announcements that will change the sailing landscape for the 2024 Paris Olympics and the World Sailing Youth World Championships from 2021.

One key change will see the inclusion of a Mixed One-person Kiteboard event at the Youth Sailing World Championships from 2021. The proposal was made to the World Sailing Council by the Events Committee, which is chaired by former Australian Sailing Vice-President Sarah Kenny.

This change will align the Youth World Championships with the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing events and strengthen the pathway for Kiteboarding to the Olympic Games.

Furthermore, Council changed the Boy's Two Person Dinghy event at the Youth Worlds to the Boy's / Mixed Two Person Dinghy, sailed on the 420. The inclusion of a Mixed 420 in the Youth Worlds also aligns itself to the Paris 2024 Olympic where a Mixed 470 is on the slate.

The Kiteboarding and Mixed two-person Dinghy for the World Sailing Youth Worlds will take effect from 2021.

The World Sailing Equipment Council also approved the Equipment Committee’s recommendation to select the Windsurfer iFoil as the Men’s and Women’s Windsurfer Equipment for Paris 2024.  The Techno Plus Sail Board will be unchanged as the equipment selected for the 2020 Australian Youth Championships.

Australian Sailing recently published its selection policy for the 2020 World Youth Sailing Championships, which will be held in in Salvador, Brazil in December 2020. The selection policy for the one-person sail board states that the Boy and Girl with the highest points in the one-person Sail board at the 2020 Australian Youth Championships (to be held from the 10-14 January at the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club) will be selected.
