WASS Women on Water – Windsurfers & Wings Weekend
Published Mon 29 Mar 2021
A couple of weeks ago twenty four eager and excited young ladies descended on South of Perth Yacht Club for a weekend of fun and challenge on water. The goal of the weekend was to connect, learn new skills, have a great time and create momentum in the women’s sailing movement in Perth.
Windsurfing and Wing Foiling were the activities for the weekend, fast and accessible ways to get on water with the ability to sail out of the clubs, free sail or for those who choose, to take it all the way to the Olympics in the Wind or Kite Foil arena. For most it was their first time on these craft and for others it was an opportunity to really take a step up in their skills.
In a huge show of collaboration between WASS together with WAIS, hosts South of Perth Yacht Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Fremantle Sailing Club, Action Sports WA and North Freo Stand-Up Surf Shop, we were able to bring together seven coaches, five coach boats, twenty windsurfing boards and rigging along with four wing and foil setups.
We were greeted with beautiful winds throughout the weekend and everyone got up windsurfing with many getting up planning by the end of the weekend! It wasn’t just all on water, a powerful lunch time story telling session with the girls on Saturday provided some empowering insights to help build a stronger and more connected sailing community.
With so much love for the weekend, we will be running a second WOW day on the 11th of April.
WindFoiling and Kitefoiling are new and exciting classes for the 2024 Olympic Games opening up opportunities for both men and women to fly on water and race at the top level. For more information reach out to WAIS Pathway Coach and WASS Coordinator Matt Jerwood.
