WA Tour Interrupted
Published Wed 10 Feb 2021
Last weekend the Collin Mullins Youth Regatta was held at Royal Perth Yacht Club. The third event of the five event WA Tour Series had some challenging conditions for the sailors and crews to contend with.
Six teams battled it out for the trophies and accolades, however most were just grateful to get back on the water. Will Boulden (Alpha Racing Team), Ethan Prieto-Low (Swan River Sailing Team), Conor Nicholas (Ocean Ranger Racing), Marcello Torre (Columbus Racing), Kaiella Taylor (Forte Racing) and Lucy Alderson (Akamai Race Team).
Marcello Torre dominated the five-race round robin beating every competitor for a clean sweep atop the leader board. Ethan Prieto-Low gave them their first loss in Race 1 of Semi-Final 2 which led to some heated moments in Race 2 with Torre winning and a point deduction for Prieto-Low. Race 3 however proved too much for Torre as Prieto-Low advanced to the Finals.
In the other Semi-Final, Boulden beat Nicholas which meant Torre and Nicholas battled it out for third in the Petit Final with Torre returning to their successful streak to win third overall.
The Final saw Will Boulden from Alpha Racing Team and Ethan Prieto-Low of Swan River Sailing Team duke it out with all teams and spectators hanging on each tack and gybe in our local version of the America’s Cup. In the end Will Boulden and the Alpha Racing Team sailed through the finish line victorious, relegating Prieto-Low into second.
The City of Perth Youth Cup, due to conclude today, has been postponed till April due to the current WA Government restrictions.
