Victorian Clubs are calling for volunteers to assist with 33 significant events during the Summer of Sailing. You can click here to find your nearest club to register and volunteer.

The Summer of Sailing season starts from the 13 December 2019 with the first World Championships kicking off with the Finn Gold Cup at Royal Brighton Yacht Club (RBYC). This is followed by the silly season of eleven (11) events back to back around the state including the Australian Optimist Nationals at Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV), Australian Youth Nationals at Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club (SSCBC) and the 49er/49er FX and Nacra 17 World Championships at Royal Geelong Yacht Club  RGYC) to name few.

Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) is hosting the largest junior regatta in Australia with over 300 competitors expected. Michael Newman, the General Manager at RYCV, said with a busy events calendar in Victoria all clubs are calling on volunteers for on water and onshore roles to assist and join in the experience. Volunteering is a fun way of making and catching up with friends.

One person with 25 years’ experience is Glenys Wilson, who has been assisting at many regattas with her husband, Kevin Wilson. Glenys’s volunteer network now extends to people from all over Australian and overseas.

Glenys encourages potential first-timers to think about what they love doing in sailing and at a regatta and outline this to the organisers via the online registration portal or by direct email. And most of all, to register now and get involved.

Both Sandringham Yacht Club and Royal Geelong Yacht Club confirmed the average bed nights booked by teams attending the Laser and the 49er/49er FX and Nacra 17 World Championships was an average 46 nights in Victoria.

So join the team and volunteer for one of the many regattas around Victoria. You may be rubbing shoulders with a first-time sailor attending their first world championships or a sailor who will be sailing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan. You never know who you are going to meet.
