Australian Sailing is mourning the passing of Brian John Richardson OAM ASM, a valued member of the historic Australia II sailing crew that won the America’s Cup in 1983, who passed on Sunday 15 September 2024.

Through his incredible contributions to both Sailing and Rowing, Richardson had an incredible impact on those he worked, sailed and rowed with, as well as with the broader sailing community as a whole.

Born to Max and Reen Richardson on 24 July 1947, Richardson was the beloved partner of Suzie and a loving parent to Tempe, Hamish and Annabelle.

Raised in Adelaide, Brian was Captain of Boats in years 11 and 12 and played the sport of AFL which he remained engaged with throughout his life.

His sailing career saw him part of the iconic America’s Cup victory that has remained one of the most celebrated moments in Australian sporting history. Richardson crewed on the 1983 winning boat, Australia 2, with his “band of brothers”, bringing to an end the New York Yacht Club’s 132-year winning streak.

Richardson was officially inducted to the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame in 2017 for his efforts.

In addition to his sailing contributions, Richardson’s extensive rowing career saw him win the King's Cup in 1979 and row for Australia in the Men’s 8 at the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games, as well as coach at the highest level for many years.
