Upcoming Australian Sailing Courses

Published Mon 29 May 2023

Over the coming months, Australian Sailing in conjunction with local clubs are hosting several Officials, Sailing Coach and Instructor and Assistant Instructor courses, giving yourself and your club members the opportunity to up skill and obtain Australian Sailing qualifications.

We encourage your club to promote these courses to your members, to not only help them build on their own skills and knowledge, but to enable them to give back to your club.

Details on these upcoming courses can be found below.

Sailing Coach – 18 years and over
This course aims to build the capacity and capability of Sailing Clubs by training and developing individual Sailing Coaches that will be responsible for coaching the next era of sailors/athletes. Focussing on coaching fundamentals, that can be adapted to any specific class, the online component of the course is 6-hours, followed by a 2-day face-to-face course. If you want to coach above Green Fleet, this is what you need!

Dinghy Instructor – 16 years and over
This course aims to teach instructors how to deliver the first three courses of the Dinghy Program including Tackers, Start Sailing 1, Start Sailing 2, and Better Sailing. Participants will learn and practise effective techniques for theory and practical instructing with continuous feedback and support. You will also need to obtain a First Aid Certificate and complete a Powerboat Handling course (RYCT).

Assistant Dinghy Instructor – 12 years and over
This course focuses on the skills that an Assistant Instructor will need to assist a qualified Australian Sailing Instructor in delivering dinghy training courses. This qualification is for those who wish to progress in the sport by helping others who are learning. A great first step to becoming an accredited Instructor.

Regional & National Race Officer
The Regional and National Race Officer Seminar is used to educate individuals wishing to be the Race Officer in charge. It covers in detail; race documentation, safety, event, and race management principles that are common to being a Course Race Officer through to Principal Race Officer at Championship events.

Keelboat Instructor Course
This course aims to teach instructors how to deliver the introductory courses of the Keelboat Program including Start Crewing and Start Helming. Participants will learn and practise effective techniques for theory and practical instructing with continuous feedback and support.

Officials Workshop/Information Session (2 hrs)
This event is for anyone who currently is an official or interested in becoming an official. This is the perfect time to gain knowledge whilst having the opportunity to talk, ask questions and learn from highly qualified officials. There will be information about the changes to the Race Officer qualification.
