Toronto Amateur Sailing Club finalist for Lake Mac Awards

Published Thu 06 Mar 2025

This follows an already very successful season for the Lake Macquarie club, which was recognised as the Australian Sailing Club of the Year (Cat B) at both the NSW & ACT Sailing Awards, and at the National Sailing awards in 2024.

Toronto Amateur Sailing Club has focused on local partnerships over the past season, with resounding success. The club has partnered with numerous class associations and clubs, Lake Macquarie Council, local businesses, and Australian Sailing, to promote sailing through the running of state and national championship regattas and community events.

Hosting and delivering numerous class championships is a considerable challenge for a club of Toronto’s size, especially given it is run by a dedicated team of volunteer members. Over the past few years, the club has established itself as one of the premier regatta venues on Lake Macquarie, hosting multiple Optimist NSW Championships, the Moth Australian Championship, Windsurfer National Championship, and State Championship events for the MG14, Heron and Sabot classes

TASC has also been actively involved in the wider community, opening is doors as an Australian Sailing Paris 2024 Olympic Live Site and hosting a French themed event for members and guests during the Paris Olympics! The club also took part in a local council activation of the Toronto foreshore as part of the ‘Lake Macquarie Float Your Boat’ event!

The club’s work with these community events and invitational sailing regattas has brought thousands of sailors and families together in the Toronto area, generating great interest in our sport and business for the local economy.

The club has a pragmatic approach to the volunteered time of members, ensuring that their time is spent on partnering with class associations to deliver events, as well as the running of the club’s Discover Sailing Programs. This approach has been a huge success for the club, with strong interest across its Discover Sailing courses and programs, and renewed participation in dinghy racing with the growth of the Sabot, Moth and MG14 classes.

TASC is a proud Discover Sailing Centre, with a team of Assistant Instructors and qualified Dinghy and Windsurfing Instructors, providing opportunities for new members to try sailing. The club is dedicated to training its volunteer workforce, using the Australian Sailing programs for the accreditation of new Instructors, Coaches, Race Officers, Measurers and Judges.

Later in 2025, Toronto Amateur Sailing Club will host Youth Sail NSW, one of Australia’s largest youth sailing events. Featuring a Coaching Clinic and the NSW Youth Championship regatta, this event will see over 250 competitors and families flock to the shores of Lake Macquarie for a week of sailing in the October school holidays (1-6 Oct 2025).

Australian Sailing congratulates Toronto Amateur Sailing Club and it’s members for their nomination as a finalist for the 2025 Lake Mac Awards! The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner at Belmont 16ft Skiff Club on Friday 28 March 2025!
