The first ever NT Womens Keelboat Regatta (NTWKR) set to kick off in Darwin

Published Mon 10 Aug 2020

Dues to the AWKR being cancelled the 4 x NT teams were looking for something to fill that space.  It was the biggest team NT had ever mustered and they would not let COVID stop them coming up with the NTWKR event that kicks off this Saturday 15th August.

Expectations were not that high, it was just going to be something to piggy back onto club racing… club racing has now been moved to another day and they have now run out of boats due to demand!

Registrations flowed in and after the dust has settled 13 yachts with 77 crew are set to take part in the inaugural NT Womens Keelboat Regatta. There will be 3 divisions; Small Keelboat (U30), Large Keelboat & Sports Boats.

There has been a rush of women putting hands up to volunteer and get the event off the ground from catering to display boards and on-water support which has been a welcome surprise for organisers. Now that plans are coming together they can all breathe a sigh of relief before the fun begins this Saturday.

There is a fairly full calendar with not just the regatta making up part of this project.  Sponsorship was sourced from the NT Government as they had just launched their #sheplaysnt initiatives so timing could not have been better.

The NTWKR will include; ladies learn to sail and powerboat courses, Women in Sport Networking Night and the Regatta itself.  They are predominantly local teams but we will have 3 from interstate (2 x SA & 1 x QLD).

Full report to come after the regatta.
