Sydney Pride Regatta Sets Sail, Kicking Off Mardi Gras Season with Historic Celebration
Published Thu 20 Feb 2025
The inaugural Sydney Pride Regatta made history on 14 February as the first-ever Pride twilight regatta for yachts on Sydney Harbour, marking a vibrant start to the city’s Mardi Gras festivities. Organised in collaboration with the Royal Australian Navy Sailing Association (RANSA) and Greenwich Flying Squadron (GFS), the event celebrated inclusivity and diversity in the sailing community as part of the broader Pride in Sport Festival, proudly supported by Australian Sailing.
The regatta featured a twilight race with over 100 crew members aboard 13 yachts, each hoisting pride flags and creating a colourful spectacle against the iconic Sydney skyline. Sailors harnessed strong winds, delivering exhilarating on-water action with sharp manoeuvres, competitive spirit, and seamless teamwork, highlighting both technical skills and vibrant community camaraderie.
Following the race, sailors and supporters gathered at the RANSA clubhouse in Rushcutters Bay for an evening of camaraderie, complete with dinner, drinks, and entertainment. The event fostered a sense of belonging and highlighted the importance of inclusivity in sport, aligning with the Pride in Sport initiative that champions LGBTQ+ inclusion across all levels of Australian sport.
Due to the overwhelming success of the inaugural Sydney Pride Regatta, organisers have announced that it will become an annual event, further promoting inclusivity and diversity in the sailing community.
The Sydney Pride Regatta not only celebrated the LGBTQ+ community but also set a precedent for future inclusive sporting events in Australia. As an official part of the Pride in Sport Festival and one of the opening events of the Mardi Gras season, supported by Australian Sailing, it exemplified the festival’s theme of ‘Free to Be,’ encouraging individuals to embrace and celebrate their unique identities.
Pride in Sport continues to lead the way in supporting all sports to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ people which will lead to increased participation, and the Sydney Pride Regatta stood as a testament to this mission, bringing together the sailing community in a vibrant celebration of diversity.
