Is a furling jib suitable as a storm jib? This is a question you might get.

The short answer is ‘no’! A furling jib is not suitable as a storm jib.

Let’s take a look and refer to the Special Regulations 4.24.2. One problem is the construction of the furling jib. A furling jib is unlikely to meet the regulation prescribed colour material. Also, the means of attaching the luff of the jib to the stay must be independent of any luff groove device.

On size, a storm jib’s area and dimensions are to be taken as at those when the sail is fully deployed; unfurled.
Auditors should feel comfortable not accepting furling jibs as storm jibs, and also be at ease when explaining the shortfalls of furling jibs in comparison to specific dedicated and manufactured storm jibs.
