Sailing through hard borders
Published Tue 04 Aug 2020
Over the school holidays and warm winter months the SailabilityWA dynamic coaching duo of Grant Alderson and daughter Lucy have been hard at work with their fabulous winter training program. Sailability begun off the success of Gold Medallist Noel Robins, Jamie Dunross and Graeme Martin at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. Royal Perth Yacht Club developed a programme for people with disabilities to participate in mainstream Club sailing activities, from trying sailing through to club racing and high performance/elite competitions.
SailabilityWA Inc has grown into a 'Not for Profit' entity organised by an Operational Committee and a part-time Co-ordinator. The programs are run by trained and experienced Volunteers with the generosity of private donations and sponsorship, limited government grants. All of whom are passionate about sharing their love of sailing with people with disabilities.
The Master Classes include sailing references such as Points of Sail and detailed sessions on how to read the weather both on and off the water. They also focus on not just getting to know your vessel but knowing yourself and hoe these suburb yachts are set up to help you enjoy your experience of sailing. Supported by 2019 Sailor of the Year with a Disability – Genevieve Wickham, a Para Sailor in the Hansa 303 class.
