Sailing and its impact on wellbeing
Published Tue 04 Feb 2020
We all know there are several key factors that can have a positive impact on a teenager’s well-being. Specific societal, emotional and physical factors can help develop our kids in to thriving young adults, and the sport of sailing is recognised as one of the leading activities to help foster these outcomes.
Getting out on the water and active in a fun, safe space with your friends can help deliver the following positive outcomes.
Social
More than anything else, OutThere Sailing puts a focus on the social aspect of sailing. Participants are encouraged to bring their friends, but throughout the course they will also meet and hang out with a range of new ones. OutThere Sailing programs bring together people of different ages and life experiences in an environment which focuses on team building and communication skills as opposed to competition.
Emotional
Learning a new skill whilst getting out in nature can have positive effects on a teenager’s emotional well-being. Trying something new and succeeding can increase levels of self-confidence and a sense of achievement. Overcoming obstacles with a team can help to strengthen bonds and encourage positive self-esteem and confidence within groups and group working situations.
Physical
Sailing is a workout! Most casual observers don’t realise, but sailing can be a highly physical sport. From using a bunch of different muscles you had forgotten even existed to jumping around the boat and swimming to upright a capsized boat, sailing is a workout. Sailing promotes strength, coordination and balance; these are all play an important role in the development of the teenage brain. Exercise also releases endorphins, which can also help bring about feelings of euphoria and general well-being.
