Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadrons wins the Australian Maid Youth Match Racing Regatta

Published Thu 19 Jul 2018

Patrick Harris and his RNZYS team took the finals of the 2018 Australian Maid Youth Match Racing Regatta in emphatic fashion with a 3 - 0 score against round robin leader Finn Tapper (CYCA).

Tapper, who had a near perfect 14 - 1 record in the rounds robin, pushed Harris in each match, with the result always close.

DSC's Jed Cruickshank, helming in his second Grade 3 competition was forced to fourth by the experienced RPAYC team lead by James Farquharson, with the petit final match score 2 - 1 in James' favour.

With the semis and finals conducted in Saturdays light and variable conditions, the competitors had a range of the best that Fannie Bay could produce over the four days. Wednesday certainly provided some fresher sailing for the first round robin.

Fridays' program included the final round robin matches and the play-offs for 5th and 6th between RSYS' Charlotte Griffin and the youngest team and skipper in the regatta, Will Drew from WA's RFBYC. Charlotte took first blood in the first to two competition, but Will showed great maturity for his age to take the next two matches and fifth spot.

The next Match Racing event on the NT calendar is the Arafura Games starting on April 27 2019
