RFBYC Youth Squad learning more than just sailing
Published Thu 13 Jun 2019
The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club Sailing Institute is holding their three session – Winter 2019 Youth Racing Squad starting June.
This squad training is for all capable young WA sailors from any club or class to be immersed in a mentoring structure that promotes the abilities of making new friends, learning new skills all whilst having lots of fun.
These events aim to develop teamwork, communication and boat handling skills in the forgiving yet technically challenging BW8 keelboats.
Sailors are required to have previous keelboat experience and aged between 12 to 18 to participate. Sailors can participate in squad training sessions a number of times to build their fundamental knowledge and skills.
These sessions will focus on advanced fleet racing knowledge and valuable skills that can be transposed to any class of sailboat racing. Progression from this squad is into the adrenaline filled excitement of the Match Racing Squad.
Consisting of five on water sessions led by head coach Lachy Gilham and his team of WA’s talented young adult coaches. Sessions kick off this Saturday from 9am and continue Sunday, June 23 and finishes on Saturday, June 29.
Sailing isn’t all about on the water, squad members will also have a sail making experience at One Sails Perth, learning to make various class jibs and other vital sail repair techniques.
Once the sailors have the ability to confidently sail in and out of the pen without assistance from an on-board coach, they may be invited later in the year to attend the Youth Match Racing Squad and invitation to the Sailing Institute Regatta in September 2019.
