The next Kraken released in Perth mid-August
Published Thu 30 May 2019
The duo manning the ropes on Kraken have sailed further than a lap around the Earth - 25,000 nautical miles in half a decade.
Launched in 2014, Kraken, a Jeanneau Sunfast 3600, and her crew of Todd Giraudo and David ‘Dubbo’ White have competed in most of the major blue water races Australia has to offer. Apart from the maiden voyage from Sydney to Hobart, which required a minimum of six crew, everything else has been double handed.
Over a post-race rum or two on an afternoon they were asked if they have to really like the other person to do a month straight with only one other person on board.
“No you don’t, you barely see them,” Dubbo replied.
Kraken has graced the starting line and claimed podiums in such events as the 2018 Melbourne to Osaka, the 2017 Melbourne to Hobart, the 2017 Fremantle to Bali and the complete WA Blue Water Season.
With a prized piece of silverware now sitting on the mantle piece, including Second on IRC in the Osaka Race.
There were some challenging moments experiences like when the rig fell off near Kalbarri in the 2016 Dirk Hartog Ocean Classic. But they bounced back then and plan to again now.
The next Kraken, a Jeanneau Sunfast 3300, arrives in Perth mid-August with an already packed schedule - 2019 Fremantle to Geraldton, 75th Sydney to Hobart, Bali 2020 and Sydney to Auckland in 2021.
And maybe a rum here and there. Release the “next” KRAKEN!
