As restrictions start to ease in Metro Melbourne, we are hopeful that the Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS) can go ahead anticipating a full five race day calendar in 2021 - 2022. The first race the Shirley Freeman Memorial Trophy is planned for November 28th at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. 

The PPWCS divisional splits of female helm, mixed and all women crews aim to provide opportunities at all skill levels for developing the confidence of both boat owners to be on their boat during racing and experienced female sailors to skipper helping to build bigger fleets.

Several keelboat clubs around Port Phillip are now getting on board to provide regular sailing opportunities within their existing sailing programs for women sailors to upskill and engage more fully in club life. Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) and Mornington Yacht Club (MYC) offered Female Helm racing opportunities last year within their existing club Twilight races. The She Sails Victorian committee are keen to hear from any other clubs planning similar initiatives to help promote these events and increase participation of women. 

For such initiatives to be successful, with only a small number of female keelboat owners, women are very reliant on boat owners. We thank all those owners who have supported women sailors in lending boats and providing mentorship and training to progress their sailing goals in previous seasons. 

It would be great if there were more boat owners who would be interested in lending their boats for the PPWCS and AWKR events this season. PPWCS is a great opportunity to learn new skills and make great friends along the way. All clubs also host great social events in the club house after racing, boat owners and mentors welcome too!
