Looking for something new to try this Summer?
Published Tue 31 Oct 2023
Why not try Wing-surfing? Wing-surfing, and the more advanced wing-foiling, is the latest water sports craze to hit our waters. Unlike windsurfing, the wing isn’t attached to the board, but is controlled by your hands whilst standing on a board. It is a fantastic way to get more time on the water and to learn new skills.
Australian Sailing has recently launched its new Learn to Wing program. This program gives you the basic skills and understanding of wing-surfing to confidently get up on the board and turn, helping you progress to wing-foiling.
What experience do you need ?
The best thing about taking part in a Learn to wing course is that no prior experience is needed. Mastering the basics is easy and everyone can give it a go!
How long does it take to learn?
Instruction by qualified Australian Sailing instructors will have you up on the board in no time. All equipment is provided.
You can try a Learn to Wing Experience which lasts approximately three and half hours and which will provide you with the essential basic skills to get up on the board and turn with assistance from a qualified instructor in a safe and supportive environment.
If you want to learn more skills and progress, you can sign up to a full Learn to Wing course. Here you will be taught how to safely land and launch the wing, tack, and gybe and how to get your board to go faster in different wind conditions. By the end of the course, you will be at a good enough level to go out and practice the skills you have learnt. Confident wingsurfers can then progress to wing-foiling and take part in a Foillab.
Clubs will start to deliver the courses over the summer, click on the links below to find your nearest Learn to Wing course or experience this summer.

What Happens Next?
If you have successfully completed a Learn to Wing Course at your club, and want to take the next step into Wing Foiling, you can participate in a FoilLAB, at your local club. FoilLABs are delivered by qualified sailing coaches and involve a one-day introductory session focussing on the fundamental theoretical skills required to foil in the morning before progressing to using the foiling equipment out on the water in the afternoon.
