Lifetime Achievements celebrated at the Queensland Sailing Awards

Published Tue 19 Oct 2021

Ann McLindin, Daryl Skinner and Rob Mundle OAM were all awarded Lifetime Achievement awards and the prestigious Solo Trophy at the 2021 Queensland Sailing Awards held at the Colmslie Hotel in Morningside on Friday 15th October.

All three recipients have contributed to the Queensland sailing community over a combined total of 150 years!

Here are part of their stories.

Ann McLindin from Brisbane Sailing Squadron:

As Brisbane Sailing Squadron celebrates its 100th year of sailing on the Brisbane River, the Committee wishes to recognise the outstanding contribution of long serving club secretary, Ann McLindin. Ann has held the role of secretary for over 40 years having first joined the Committee in 1976. Apart from a few short breaks along the way, Ann has provided continuous service to the club as a non-sailing volunteer.

Ann has supported more than 10 Commodores in her time as Secretary and the importance of her role in the efficient administration of the club and maintaining high standards of governance cannot be understated.

Ann's voluntary contribution extends far beyond the role of Secretary and over the years she consistently worked above and beyond to promote the interests of the club and serve the membership. Sourcing of financial grants and sponsorships, organising social events, ensuring the smooth running of race days, government relations and assisting in the kitchen are but a few of the voluntary activities undertaken by Ann. In the club's Centenary year, Ann has taken on the primary role of researching and capturing the history of the club and its connection to the Bulimba community. We hope Ann's dedication to this work will result in a book marking the club's 100th year.

Daryl Skinner from Keppel Bay Sailing Club:

Daryl has been a constant volunteer for over 50 years and has been involved in all aspects of the club, always keen to lend a hand. Daryl joined the Club when it was first established in 1957 and has been a irreplaceable Member and volunteer since. Daryl volunteers during Sunday Club Racing as PRO, Safety Boat, Start Boat or doing Results, and when he is not doing that, he is racing his Arrow, giving tips to the greener sailors on the course. As a qualified Instructor Daryl also volunteers to assist the Green Fleet training and helps to develop the clubs younger instructors.

Daryl also volunteers every Tuesday, and has been for the past 5 years, helping maintain the clubs fleet of boats. Daryl is also a volunteer at Sailability Capricornia. Daryl was also a volunteer Member of the Sailing Committee for 10 years.

Whenever there is an away regatta, Daryl is always competing on his Arrow and is always helping our younger sailors rigging and helping them understand the course. Daryl has also volunteered at many events held at the Keppel Bay Sailing Club including the F-18 World Titles, World Taser Titles, Moth Nationals, Sabot States, and Impulse Nationals.

Due to Daryl’s wealth of knowledge, he is a vital and admired presence, not just at KBSC, but at other Clubs as well.

Rob Mundle from Southport Yacht Club:

Mr. Rob Mundle OAM has spent a lifetime of dedication to the sport from recreational, competitive, and onto becoming an author, promotor and commentator of sailing. Rob received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to sailing and journalism. He has been an active sailor since 1957, and is, among many other things, recognised for his contribution to sport via the following:

• introducing two significant sailing classes to Australia - the Laser and the J/24.

• As a journalist and columnist on sailing for the Sydney Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror, Australian Rob brought the sport to the public's attention like never before!

• Being an active sailor,. racing 16ft and 18ft skiffs on Sydney Habour. He was the first 18ft skiff skipper to helm while on the trapeze. In 1980 he won the NSW J/24 Championships and also qualified for the Tornado Catamaran World Championships.

• Around 1980 Rob entered the world of television, and in doing so delivered a new dimension when it came to presenting sailing to the wider audience. He went on to cover yachting at four Olympics for TV, Los Angeles, Seoul, Atlanta, and Sydney. He brought new life to the live coverage of the start of the Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race each year. Which, Rob has now reported on for more than 50years, and competed in it on three occasions.

• In recent years he has taken up the role of "Media Manager" for the famous supermaxi, Wild Oats XI.

• As an author of 19 books including the international best seller Fatal Storm.

• As an active member of Southport Yacht Club playing roles with starting Sail Paradise and supporting the growth of the junior sailing program and divisional yachts.
