Getting to know Australia’s e-sailing Champion – Josh Griffith
Published Tue 02 Jun 2020
After taking the National Championship crown we catch up with Josh from Sandringham Yacht Club in Victoria who now prepares to represent Australia in the Trans Tasman e-sailing showdown this Sunday 7 June.
-How did you get in to Virtual Sailing? I got into e-sailing through my brother, around June of last year. I thought it was a cool game and it was very competitive.
-What type of boat do you normally sail? I normally sail a 29er - my twin brother Dan is my crew and we enjoy light wind because that’s where we do best. In virtual regatta, my favourite boat is either the J70 or the F50. The J70 gives close and tactical racing while the F50 relies on speed and starts.
-How does it feel to be Australia’s e-sailing Champion? Winning the national challenge was a bit of a shock really. Having come 2nd in my state and only making it into the finals on a countback, my goal was to make top 6 to go against the kiwis. This made it that much better to race really well on the day and take out the win against some big names.
-How do you feel going up against the Kiwis on Sunday? Racing with the New Zealanders next weekend will be tough, I know a couple of them are very good sailors in real life and a couple others are very good esailors too, so I’ll be looking to keep up my performance from last Thursday and hopefully do Australia proud!
-Are you going to be doing any training/preparation? I’ll probably keep my ‘preparation’ pretty similar to what I did before states and Nationals - to do a couple challenge races within the game and maybe a few private races with my friends Ethan, Oscar and Zac.
The Zhik trans-Tasman eSailing Championships will take place this Sunday 7 June at 6pm AEST with the regatta to be live streamed on the Australian Sailing Facebook page. Check out the full line up via this link
