General Manager - Tasmania Monthly Update September 2023
Published Thu 14 Sep 2023
On Saturday 9th September 2023, the Tasmanian sailing community came together at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania for the announcement of the winners for the 2023 Tasmanian Sailing Awards. It was a well-attended event with over 80 people celebrating the finalists and winners of each award. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners!
A list of all the winners can be found HERE.
There were so many stories shared, and in particular, we celebrated our Barranjoey Pin recipient, Peter Attrill. Peter is now 93 years young and was delighted to be part of the evening bringing his family to help share his award. Peter spoke of his love of sailing for life and how it has been an important part of his family.
Our Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to well-known Tasmanian sailor, Don Calvert. Don is known for his boat, Intrigue, and a lifetime of achievements, sailing commitments and ongoing support to new sailors.
Thank you to all who attended the evening and made it so enjoyable. Celebrating our sailing community is a way to bring us all together!
We recently held our Training in Focus LIVE Instructor Conference. With over 40 attendees and many clubs represented from around the state, there were Instructors who participated in both onshore and onwater activities. This was a great way to prepare for the sailing season, refresh our teaching skills while learning new ideas.
Last month all Commodores were sent a link to a ballot to vote for the new Tasmanian Regional Advisory Committee members. I am delighted to announce the 2023/24 Tasmanian Regional Advisory Committee – Richard Bevan RYCT (Chair), Chris Symonds WYC, Jenny Graney KBSC, Danny Cunningham BYC, Barrie McIndoe PDYC, Stephen Miller MPYC and Brent McKay DSS/KYC. The Committee will meet several times a year to discuss ways of better supporting sailing in Tasmania.
Over the last few months, Australian Sailing Tasmania, has worked closely with MAST to develop a document to support sailing clubs to ensure that our sailors stay safe. The Sailing Safely In Tasmania document gives yacht clubs around the state information about safety equipment for coach boats, navigation light requirements for coach boats and sailing dinghies, and the rights of piloted vessels and pilot-exempt vessels. It also addresses protocols around berthing vessels, how to contact VTS and what information they require for all areas of the state. This is a document that provides all the necessary safety information for Tasmania in one area.
Australian Sailing would like to thank Tasports and MAST for their input and for supporting our clubs.
