Congratulations to all the clubs, volunteers and sailors who organised and participated in sailing events in the last couple of months. There have been many events happening around the state and interstate for all classes of boats. Recently, I was present at the Sydney Hobart Village with a Discover Sailing display promoting your clubs and sailing in general. It was a pleasure to chat with sailors, past and present, about their sailing journeys and engage with people who are interested in how and where to learn to sail.
Adventures of a Sailor Girl, Nic Douglass, was at the SheSails event held at the RYCT on December 31st where we celebrated women in sailing and acknowledged the women who had completed their first major offshore race. It was well attended, however, with the devastating loss of two sailors during the Sydney Hobart Race, it was a time to also reflect and remember.
At the recent Regional Advisory Committee Meeting, safety when sailing and the dreaded ‘hit by the boom’ situation, were discussed. Some Tasmanian Clubs have made the decision to introduce compulsory wearing of helmets for learn to sail participants. This is not mandated by Australian Sailing but may be something to consider and discuss with your Class and Club. Here is a link to an Australian Sailing article visiting this topic - Concussion.

Exciting Updates to Australian Sailing’s Education & Training Programs
As part of the ongoing Instructor, Coach, and Official Development Strategy update, Australian Sailing is modernising its education and training programs to create a more streamlined and effective learning experience.
A key part of this initiative is the transition to a new Learning Management System (LMS), which will integrate seamlessly with Australian Sailing member profiles, making access to online courses more efficient.
To support this transition, the Australian Sailing Resources website will undergo maintenance until early March 2025. During this period, some resources—primarily used by Discover Sailing Centre Principals, Instructors, and Coaches, including the Training Hub—may be temporarily unavailable.
To assist with enquiries, a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section will be available on our website, and further updates will be provided to stakeholders over the coming weeks and when the LMS goes live.
We appreciate your patience and look forward to delivering an improved learning experience for everyone involved in delivering sailing through clubs and class associations.
