General Update
September and the lead up to September is always a busy time with the Queensland Sailing Awards, Youth Sail Queensland and the Queensland Yachting Championship events. While it’s busy, it is also our most favourite time of year. Seeing our community recognised through the awards, our youth having such a fabulous time in Central Queensland at Keppel Bay Sailing Club and the big boats matching their skills against the best boats in Queensland.
Alison is continuing to work with Port Curtis Sailing Club and their blossoming Tackers program, and Grant attended the first DSC Course for South Brisbane Sailing Club. Being a Discover Sailing Centre has many benefits, so if you are running a learn to sail program, please consider becoming one of our Queensland DSC’s. There is plenty of flexibility so reach out to Alison or Grant for a chat about how the AS programs can fit in with your club.
I also attended the Opening Days for Royal Queensland, Darling Point and Southport Yacht Club. I loved seeing the traditions for all three clubs. If you would like us to attend your Opening Day next year, please let us know and we will do our best to attend.
We’ve been working on our travel plans for the next 6 months so expect an email or phone call from either Grant or Alison about an upcoming club visit. We are also hoping to deliver the Participation Workshops to your committees to help you build participation at your club. This is a great opportunity to think big and to be bold.
RevSport admins will soon be asked to complete some extra questions about your club for the new focus on the public facing Club Finder. People will be able to search for what they are looking for easier with new searches for activities and facilities. So keep an eye out for an email explaining what is happening and when.
Discover Sailing Month
If you haven’t already picked a date for your club to hold a Discover Sailing Day (DSD) in November this year, don’t leave it too long. The benefits to your club to hold a DSD are many and the event itself can be as simple or as festival like as you need. You should have seen an email with links to all the marketing materials you will need. But please reach out to the team if you need any help at all. We are here to support you.
Action Item/s for Club:
• Make a commitment to hold a Discover Sailing Day in November
• Reach out to your Club Support Officer for any assistance you need
Queensland Sailing Awards
It was a lovely night for the Queensland Sailing Community to get together at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron earlier this month for the 2023 Queensland Sailing Awards. There was a great vibe in the room with clubs bringing many supporters for their finalists.
This year the large focus for nominations was the SheSails Award, Youth Sailor of the Year and of course our very valued Volunteers.
Congratulations to all the winners. You can see a list of the winners and read more about the event here.
Action Item/s for Club:
• Add the Queensland Sailing Awards to your committee meeting agenda
• Allocate someone to collate the nominations for next year early
Youth Sail Queensland
By the time you are reading this, Youth Sail Queensland will be well underway. We have 207 boats registered to attend this must do youth event.
Keppel Bay provides a great environment for learning, having fun in the sun and great race management for fair racing. Olympian Mara Stransky is joining the coaching team which is very exciting. Keep an eye on our social media for all the pics and stories.
Action Item/s for Club:
• If your youth members are not attending this year – start talking about next years event today
Queensland Trailable Yacht Championships
Held as part of Airlie Beach Race week again this year with competitive racing and fun off the water events. You can see all the winners here: https://www.sailing.org.au/qld/qld-trailable_yachting_champions/
We will be looking for expressions of interest soon for a host the next two years of this event. So keep an eye out for the email.
Action Item/s for Club:
• Discuss with your committee if you might be interested in hosting this event for 2024 and 2025
