  1. Foil Labs – learn to foil.

With the ever-increasing explosion of foiling into the sailing community Australian Sailing is working to develop programs and resources to support sailors and clubs get involved in this new and exciting space.

One of the first initiatives is the development of “Foil Labs” which are day long courses to experience and learn about foiling. Foiling Labs provide a safe space for sailors to learn and interact with new types of sailing experiences and equip themselves with new knowledge to take on new experiences. Sailors will learn the fundamentals that drive a hydrofoils performance, as well learn about the body and physical relationships that offer a path to mastery. Mastering the basics gives more options to have more fun, more often. It also allows sailors to chase performance in a range of modern performance sailing classes in a fun and fulfilling way.

With the support of the Queensland Government Australian Sailing is pleased to be able to offer a limited number of Foil Labs to pilot the program.

We are looking for interested clubs who have an interest in growing foiling classes and could find around 6 intermediate (or higher) sailors aged approx. 14-23. We are looking for these interested clubs to express your interest in hosting a Foil lab between now and the end of June 2022.

Please click here to register your interest.

If you have any questions or require further information, please contact either Ben Callard (ben.callard@sailing.org.au) or Grant Willmott (grant.willmott@sailing.org.au).

  1. Queensland Government Funding for Clubs.

The Minister for Sport recently announced the development of a new sport and recreation capital grants program, and we are excited to be launching Active Gameday Projects.

This new program will invest $9.726 million (GST exclusive) to help community sport and active recreation clubs to fund field of play works that meet grassroots level playing requirements and that will enhance greater community participation.

There are two types of projects available for funding:

  • installing or upgrading of sports lighting
  • developing or upgrading of playing surfaces/space(s) including irrigation.

Funding from $50,000 up to $150,000 (GST exclusive) will be available for eligible organisations and projects who are able contribute a minimum 20 per cent of their project’s cost.*

These are the kinds of projects that will ensure clubs and organisations can maintain a quality field of play for their members to participate safely, while also having the potential to create more opportunities for people to train or compete across more days, and nights.

Funding applications will open on Monday 27 September 2021 and close at 5pm on Friday 5 November 2021 with successful applicants announced early next year.

We strongly encourage clubs and organisations to thoroughly read the Active Gameday Projects’ program guidelines and associated resources to determine if your potential project meets the program requirements, and to aid your preparations towards developing a strong application before the program opens for applications next month.

If you’d like to discuss your potential project with a member of the Sport and Recreation team we ask you to contact your local sport and recreation office to discuss club priorities and possible outcomes.

We have checked in with the infrastructure team and for watersports, boat ramps and pontoons would be considered part of field of play noting that upgrades cannot be like for like (replacements).

Action item for clubs:

    • Please share with your club committee and consider making an application for funding.
