General Update

It’s National Volunteer Week!  A huge thank you to all the Queensland volunteers that help our clubs and class associations.  We appreciate all the time you give!

This month I attended the Parliamentary Friends of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement in Queensland which was a great opportunity to talk with MP’s from all over Queensland about how they can help sailing clubs in their catchment area make the most of the opportunities that the Olympics bring.

Alison spent the May Day weekend in Central Queensland completing Discover Sailing Centre Reviews and awarding medals for the conclusion of the Sail CQ Club challenge.

Grant supported the Queensland Laser (ILCA) State Championships held at Humpybong Yacht Club also over the long weekend.  The 100 strong fleet shows that the class is strong and growing.  If you would like to help build the ILCA fleet at your club, please get in contact with class. Their website is: https://www.qldlasers.com/home/

If you haven’t had a look at Game Plan yet, it is a free online platform that allows sporting clubs of all sizes to get insights into their current capability in key areas of club administration, then supports ongoing club development with a suite of tools and resources. Delivered in partnership with the Australian Sports Commission Game Plan provides a one stop shop for reviewing, planning and providing resources to support your club or class operations and governance.

Qld Sailing Summit

During the Australian Sailing 2023 Queensland Sailing Summit, attendees were challenged to be bold in their thinking for themselves, their club or class association and their community.  The presentations from the weekend are available here for you to read and share. Thank you to Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Southport Yacht Club, Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club, Richmond River Sailing Club, South Brisbane Sailing Club for sharing their club experiences—a special mention to our Officials Panel:  Louise Davis, Chris Morgan and Greg Kemp.

The Sailing Summit is an excellent opportunity to share our experiences, knowledge and ideas on achieving our collective goals. The partnership of Australian Sailing and Queensland Clubs and Class Associations achieve much more together than we could alone, and in doing so, we create positive change and impact on our sport.

A highlight of the 2-day summit was the presentation by Sarah Ogilvie (National Head of Sport Development and Growth. Australian Sailing). Many attendees expressed a strong interest in learning more about the Participation Programs Workshop. We believe that going through this simple process as a club committee combined with the fabulous new resources will lead to excellent outcomes for clubs and help us all get ‘more people on the water, in more ways, more often’. Have a look at the presentation, and if you would like us to help you start the process, please let us know a time that suits your committee.

The Sailing Summit certainly provided opportunities to learn from one another, expand knowledge and skills, discuss learnings from every club, and share our best practices. We saw many exchanges of ideas and heard about new collaborations that can make a difference in the Queensland Sailing Community. The event should remain in May from now on, so please consider adding this event as a must-do for two of your committee to attend.
