Strengthened child sexual offence reporting and protection laws come into effect on 5 July 2021.
These laws, which emerged from the 'Child Abuse Royal Commission' will apply to schools, churches and sporting clubs.
There are two relevant changes to the law which affect sport and create new criminal offences.
- Failure to protect a child from, or take steps to remove the risk of, a sexual offence;
- Failure to report a belief of a child sexual offence (either current or past).

4. Clubs Promoting Safety – Cruising Yacht Club of Hamilton Island.
The Cruising Yacht Club of Hamilton Island have an initiative in place to include a ‘Safety Hint’ their electronic newsletter each month.
The CYCHI have enlisted the help of their club’s safety committee to write an article for each month’s newsletter, giving its members information around a specific safety topic.
For the month of March 2021, the topic was around First Aid Essentials and what extra kit may be a good idea to carry onboard over and above what is required for the Special Regulations per category of racing. They also talked about the importance of a crew briefing ensuring all crew are familiar with using the technology on board to call for help in an emergency situation.
This a great initiative, ensuring that the topic of safety is always at the forefront of boat owners thinking.
