Equipment Choices for Wingfoil Racing
Published Thu 06 Mar 2025
As wingfoil racing gains momentum, the wide range of available equipment can be overwhelming for sailors new to the class and for coaches advising on gear selection. Choosing the right equipment early is crucial—not only for performance and progression but also to avoid unnecessary costs.
Australian Sailing has developed the Wing Equipment Guidelines to support sailors and coaches in making informed equipment choices. This document provides structured recommendations on board and foil selection, hand wing specifications, and competition regulations. It also includes practical advice on gear maintenance, second-hand purchases, and cost-effective investment strategies. Key considerations such as board dimensions, foil setups, and the relationship between rider weight and equipment choice are clearly outlined to ensure sailors select the most suitable gear.
A key message for coaches:
Encourage your sailors to consult you before making major purchases. While high-performance gear may seem attractive, it won’t necessarily accelerate a sailors development if it’s not suited to their current skill level.
For those competing in Australia, the guidelines also clarify equipment limitations for national regattas, detailing what can be registered and which configurations are best suited to racing conditions.
