Dobroyd Aquatic Club to make the most of Discover Sailing Month

Published Fri 25 Oct 2024

Discover Sailing Month is fast approaching and Dobroyd Aquatic Club (DAC) is ready to make the most of the Australian Sailing initiative, with the club preparing to host an Open Day on November 9 to engage their local community.

Offering everything from windsurfing, dinghy sailing for all ages, radio controlled sailing and sailing for people with a disability, the DAC Open Day will encourage involvement and promote the benefits of sailing to all.

For DAC and their Commodore Geoff Wilson, the decision to host an official Discover Sailing Month event was an easy one.

“DAC has been sailing (in some form) on Iron Cove for more than 85 years,” said Wilson.

“The club sits on Rodd point with high volumes of foot and road traffic passing every day but despite this, surveys have found that very few members of the local community actually know what goes on at our club.

“Discover Sailing Day is an important part of the club's efforts to inform the community and ensure anyone interested in sailing gets the chance to join.

“By hosting an open day we hope to raise awareness about all the different types of sailing available at DAC and encourage members of the community to join the club and enjoy sailing in Iron Cove,” he said.

The event, set to take place from 9am-5pm AEST, will give interested individuals and families the opportunity to go for a sail, experience the fun of sailing first-hand and view club facilities for themselves.

“At DAC we concentrate on including everyone in sailing, offering a wide range of boats suitable for all abilities,” said Wilson.

“We have fleets of windsurfers, dinghies, and even radio controlled sailing boats. DAC supports sailors with a disability in casual boating on Sundays, some of these sailors join the racing on Saturdays in truly inclusive events.

“Inclusive sailing extends to keeping costs low to ensure people are not excluded financially. At DAC we rely on members volunteering to run safe activities and maintain the club house.

“Part of the enjoyment of sailing at DAC is contributing to the club and its future as a place for sailing for everyone, and we hope people will see this when they join us on November 9.
