Discover Sailing Month at Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club

Published Fri 10 Nov 2023

Discover Sailing and the Australian Sailing ‘learn to’ initiatives are crucial in providing people of all abilities the chance to try sailing. As part of Discover Sailing Month here at Australian Sailing, we will be showcasing clubs and Discover Sailing Centres that are holding Discover Sailing Days around the country, highlighting the benefits of organising and attending a Discover Sailing Day and attending a Discover Sailing Centre to learn how to sail.

Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club (PFSYC) are providing excellent opportunities to learn to sail this November with their Discover Keelboat Sailing program, where they will be holding a Discover Keelboat Sailing Day every Sunday this November.

The events are open to the public and are completely free. No experience or equipment is required, and complimentary food and drink will also be provided after the sail. For those interested in trying Keelboat sailing but do not know where to start, this could be the perfect opportunity. More information can be found on their website here

PFSYC are an Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Centre and have run multiple Discover Sailing Days and Tackers courses over the years, which have led to a rise in Junior membership, however, they are now hoping to attract some older members through their Discover Keelboat Sailing Days this month.

To successfully organise and promote their Discover Sailing Days, PFSYC have advertised on social media, added their events onto the Australian Sailing website through revSPORT, and promoted through other clubs in the area. PFSYC also noted, ”with the assistance of Australian Sailing it has been very easy, Lawson and Libby (the WA Club Support Team) have been excellent, easy to work with and happy to help wherever they can.”

Discover Sailing Days are a great way to increase membership and participation but are also a great way to showcase what clubs have to offer. PFSYC noted that Discover Sailing Days ”have provided us the opportunity to showcase our Club and give people the opportunity to go sailing which they might never have gotten before.

“We want to introduce our wonderful river and the sport of sailing to as many people as possible to grow the sport of sailing.”
