CLUB IN FOCUS: Gosford Sailing Club (GSC)

Gosford Sailing Club is located on the North Eastern foreshore of Brisbane Waters at 28 Masons Parade Gosford. Brisbane Waters are fed by the Hawkesbury River with its entrance opposite the Pittwater which is to the South. GSC is also home to World Champion sailor and Olympic Gold Medalist Tom Slingsby (pictured below).

The Club was formed in 1932 as the Gosford Sailing and Rowers Club and operated from this site running continuous Sailing competition to the present day.

Currently sailing membership is over 500 which includes 95 juniors and with 21% of their membership comprising of their very active female sailors.

GSC offer sailing and fun events for 7 to 77-year-old sailors in all fleets and classes and to back it up have a very strong volunteer support base.

 

Programs on offer:

GSC runs sailing events over the summer months on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays, and a winter series on Saturdays.

The Saturday sailing includes both Senior and Juniors programs.

The Senior fleets starting from 2.00pm for Etchells, 2.05pm for the Mixed fleet of NSs, MGs and Fireballs, 2.10pm for the Lasers, 2.15pm for the 16ft Skiffs and sports boats (Magic 25s). These sail on separate courses and rounding marks. GSC generally manage between 56 and 70 boats and host around 110 sailors each week.

Saturday Junior Sailing starts at 9am with the Level 2 Dinghy “Learn to Sail” program, then from 2.00pm the afternoon racing for Silver fleet Optimists (Dinghy LTS Level 3) commences, as well as, Junior fleet racing for Optimists, PJs and Sabots and Flying 11s. Between 21 and 32 boats participate.

Inshore yacht racing is fortnightly on Sundays - 28 yachts racing in 3 divisions. 

Offshore yacht racing is fortnightly, with a mix of windward returns and weekend races on Saturdays to clubs in Sydney Harbour and back to Gosford on Sundays.  GSC are part of and help manage the Broken Bay Interclub Challenge event where this season Gosford yachts won this coveted trophy.

GSC run twilight racing every Wednesday for 3 yacht divisions during daylight saving, which also includes their adult Discover Sailing program.

Other programs include Primary School ‘Learn to sail’, Saturday Adult ‘Learn to sail’ and commencing in February a PCYC ‘OutThere Sailing’ program and Sailability twice a week, RC yacht racing fortnightly.

 

Classes supported and types of sailing:

Junior Classes are Sabots Optimists and F11s- youth Class are 29ers 4.7 lasers.

Seniors are NS14s/ MGs fireballs Laser radial & standard rigs 16ft Skiffs.

Keel boat fleets include Etchells Sports boats (magic 25s) mixed inshore keel boats in 2divions 1 offshore division and 3 twilight keel boat divisions.

 

Gosford Sailing Club has been the host for many visiting events over past recent seasons including Etchells and Moth State Championships and Adams Ten, Sabot and Formula 16/18 National Championships. The Clubs Race management team has a well-deserved reputation for its on and off water regatta management and we pride ourselves of being able run all the events inhouse combined with our ability to have regattas managed professionally.
