Club In Focus - Daveys Bay Yacht Club

Published Fri 17 Jan 2025

Situated on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Davey’s Bay Yacht Club (DBYC) is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Victoria.

Founded in 1909, the club kicked off their 116th season on a high, hosting the 2025 Flying Fifteens Australian National Championship on 1-6 January.

This is the third time the club has hosted the championship, which this year saw 32 Flying Fifteens hit the waters of Davey’s Bay.

Boasting one of the biggest Flying Fifteen fleets on the East Coast, DBYC Commodore Cameron Taylor says the club has had a big involvement with not only the championship over the years, but in the history of Flying Fifteen racing in Australia. e

“We are one of the oldest clubs in the country to have hosted Flying Fifteen racing,” said Cameron. “We have had a long association with the Flying Fifteens, right back to when Ossie McCutcheon first brought them into the country in the late 1960s.

“So it only felt natural that we put our hands up to host the event this year.”

Besides hosting the championship, DBYC has been working hard to grow their club and for Cameron, he recognised that one of the best ways he could facilitate this was through DBYC becoming a Discover Sailing Centre.

“As a Discover Sailing Centre our sailors were able to become recognised as Australian Sailing Instructors,” said Cameron.

"Importantly this meant we could host our powerboat courses and other senior courses, and have our instructors and these courses recognised under the Discovery Sailing framework.”

This year DBYC hopes to further develop these programs and if the high uptake of their school holiday courses is any indication of what’s to come, then Cameron is pleased with the direction they are heading.

“We have conducted 10 courses so far this year and we have filled everyone, which is fantastic,” he said.”There are lots of kids coming through which is great.”
