Cairns Yacht Club Charts a Course for the Future: Empowering Sailors of All Ages
Published Thu 22 Feb 2024
In the wake of Cyclone Jasper's wrath, the Cairns Yacht Club (CYC) at Ellis Beach has faced formidable challenges, but amidst the destruction, a resilient spirit prevails.
The torrential rainfall unleashed by the cyclone, amounting to a staggering 1.5 meters within a mere 24 hours, has reshaped the once-pristine beachfront, leaving behind gullies and erosion.
However, the CYC community stands united, ready to rebuild and reaffirm their commitment to the sport they love.
Founded over 115 years ago, CYC has long been a bastion of sailing excellence and camaraderie. Its storied history boasts world champions like Darryl Beattie and Adam Beattie, whose achievements have brought glory to the club for so many years. Yet, CYC's legacy extends far beyond accolades; it is a testament to the enduring bonds forged among like-minded sailors who share a passion for the sea.
In April 2023, CYC embarked on a new chapter with the launch of CYC SheSails, an initiative aimed at promoting female participation in sailing. Since its inception, CYC SheSails has blossomed into a vibrant community, welcoming sailors of all skill levels. The program's skill-building workshops and monthly land and water events have not only empowered female sailors but also garnered widespread support from the CYC community at large.
We're thrilled by the response to SheSails, it's a testament to the inclusive spirit that defines CYC - a place where everyone, regardless of gender or experience, can find their sea legs.

As SheSails continues to inspire and uplift, CYC is poised to extend its reach beyond gender boundaries. The successful skill-building program, which consistently sees demand outstrip available spots, is set to become more inclusive, opening its doors to all CYC members eager to enhance their sailing prowess.
But the heartbeat of CYC isn't just found in its skill-building programs; it resonates throughout its racing calendar. The many years of success with our junior Green Fleet and Tackers programs continues to ignite a passion for sailing in the hearts of young enthusiasts aged 7 to teenagers. These initiatives, designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for budding sailors, have become a cornerstone of CYC's commitment to nurturing the next generation of sailors.
Another exciting addition to the CYC family is CYC Twiddlers, introduced in 2023. This innovative program offers remote control sailing boat racing, attracting participants from ages as young as 5 years old to seasoned sailors in their 80s. CYC Twiddlers has quickly become a beloved fixture within the club, fostering a new generation of sailors and providing a unique avenue for members to hone their skills and share their passion for the sport.
As CYC charts a course for the future, it does so with a steadfast commitment to its founding principles of camaraderie, excellence, and inclusivity.
In the face of adversity, the CYC community remains undaunted, buoyed by the knowledge that their passion for sailing will continue to guide them through the storm, propelling them ever forward towards new horizons of adventure and discovery.
