Australians contesting Para World Sailing Championships in Spain
Published Wed 03 Jul 2019
Five Australian Para Sailors have arrived in Puerto Sherry, Spain for the 2019 Para World Sailing Championships.
The team are well prepared for the regatta having now spent some valuable days out training on the Bay of Cadiz. The conditions have been perfect for sailing with prevailing sea breeze winds from the west providing a light to moderate race course.
All competitors are busy getting ready, testing their equipment and practising on the course area.
All five Aussies will be competing in the Hansa 303 class. Chris Symonds (TAS), World Champion 2018, will be defending his title and joining him in the men’s division will be Jason Elwes (NSW) and Robert Crofts (WA).
In the Women’s division, Genevieve Wickham (WA), who finished with a silver medal in 2018, will be racing to do one better and Alison Weatherly (VIC) will also be competing for a send time at a Para Worlds.
“There are many more entries this year and the competition will be tough as always”, Chris Symonds commented this week.
“I have been training hard back at home and feel well prepared for this regatta. I’m looking forward to racing on the beautiful waters off Puerto Sherry”, he said.
100 sailors from 28 nations have registered for the regatta, with 55 contesting the Hansa 303 Men’s and Women’s Championships.
Racing in the Para Worlds commences on Wednesday 3rd July and concludes with the final medal races on Sunday 7th July.
