Australian Sailing – Victoria calls team together for The Long Run.

With one in six Victorian men likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, Australian Sailing Victoria is hoping to raise funds for research to help beat the disease.

The team has signed-up for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s signature campaign, The Long Run, as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Australian Sailing – Victoria team captain, Kris Mannix, says the team will be covering 72km each during the month.

“All of us know someone who has been impacted by prostate cancer. We’re proud to be a part of The Long Run, with all funds raised going towards research and PCFA Specialist Nurses.

“We’d love to see the community get behind us by joining the team online or making a donation.”

People can sign-up at any point during the month.

Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in Australian men, claiming the lives of nine men every single day.

PCFA CEO Professor Jeff Dunn AO said the charity had been overwhelmed by support for The Long Run. “We know that 45 men will be diagnosed every day, and sadly, nine will die,” he said.

“We’d love to see the local community join us and take the challenge to run, walk, or wheel 72km during the month to symbolise our solidarity with all men affected.

“Men with prostate cancer face significantly higher rates of anxiety and depression, and a 70 per cent increased risk of suicide death, and yet 72 per cent of men will not seek help for mental hardship.

“The Long Run aims to help men and families go the distance, providing hope, outreach, and the promise of a brighter future through research and expert nursing care.”

“It’s never too late to take the first step – we would love to see people signing up and donating to The Long Run during September,” Prof Dunn said.

“With community support, we can help end the pain of prostate cancer.”

The campaign aims to raise $1.6 million for Australian-based prostate cancer research and PCFA Specialist Nurses.
