Sports Promotion Award

Winner: Adam South from Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron

The Flood Support Sailing Day on April 29th, 2022, conducted by The Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron (RSAYS) in conjunction with Saltwater Veterans was an opportunity to take soldiers and officers away from their day-to-day tasks and put the focus back onto themselves and developing their skills. The squadron was exceptional in organizing the event and remained flexible when soldiers were extended in NSW due to the on-going support to the 1 flood. The input from both organizations was voluntary and they gave their time, experience, and boats for the day. Whilst a key output of the day was putting ADF members out of their comfort zones, it was also an opportunity to link in with the veteran and sailing community in South Australia.

A total of 72 current and former serving members of the ADF attended the event with varying ages between 19-53. The squadron is heavily involved in female sailing so it was a delight to have 24 female serving members of the ADF in attendance this day.

The program was a great way to enhance the partnership between RSAYS and Saltwater Veterans and will form a basis for further growth in encouraging greater participation in sailing from the Defence community for many years to come.
