Brent Williams, OK Dinghy sailor was recently interviewed for the Games Guide:

How long have you been involved in your sport?

I learnt to sail when I was 11, so 46 years ago. I started racing OK Dinghy’s when I was 19 as the World Championships were being held in Victoria in 1982 and I wanted to compete in them. Now, 38 years later, and having competed in 10 World Championships I still love the boat, I’m still learning how to sail it faster, and still wanting to do a bit better.

How did you get involved in your sport?

My brother and I mucked about in our uncle’s small sailboat when we visited him and fell in love with the sport. We were lucky enough to have parents who supported what we wanted to do and have both been sailing ever since both at a competitive level and just for fun. It’s a great sport as there is a boat design available that will suit just about anyone, and a level of competition available to suit what you want at the time – and its great fun to be just mucking about in boats on the water.

What has been the highlight of your involvement in your sport?

I’ve had some good individual race results at World Championships with my best being a 2nd. Its great looking back at a huge fleet knowing you have finished in front of over 100 boats! I’ve also really enjoyed introducing my daughter to the sport and watching her fall in love with it too. However, probably the highlight is the friends I’ve made from all over Australia and the world who all share my love of good racing, good comradeship and a good beer after a race.

What are you looking forward to most about the 17th Australian Masters Games?

The opportunity to see my friends, go sailing, and show case the OK Dinghy as a great class to be a part of.

A fun fact about yourself, your sport or your sport venue

One of my favourite books about sailing is “A voyage for madmen” by Peter Nichols: In 1968, nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. It was a feat that had never been accomplished and one that would forever change the face of sailing. Ten months later, only one of the nine men would cross the finish line and earn fame, wealth, and glory. For the others, the reward was madness, failure, and death.
