Australia ll’s 40th Anniversary a Cause for Celebration

Forty years ago this month, the crew of the Australia ll engraved their names firmly in Australian sporting legend when they won the prestigious America’s Cup off the coast of Rhode Island, USA.
Inflicting the first defeat on the New York Yacht Club in 132 years, Australia ll came from 1-3 down after the first four races to secure victory in the best of seven contest, ultimately winning 4-3.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the iconic victory, clubs around Australia are hosting events for their local communities.
The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in one such club, having hosted a special event to honour the skipper, crew and the people behind the teams of Australia II back in August.
Attended by over 165 patrons, the event was attended by crew members who shared their memories and insights into what it took to win against the odds.
Australian Sailing encourages all clubs to get involved in the spirit of the anniversary and consider hosting an event for their members and community. Some possible events include a club movie night featuring a showing of ‘Race of the Century’ on Netflix, or a club trivia night with the America’s Cup as a focus.
The 1983 crew of the Australia ll was made up of extremely talented and passionate sailors. Skippered by John Bertrand AO, the 12 metre yacht was manned by team members Colin Beashel OAM, Peter Costello OAM, Damien Fewster OAM, Ken Judge OAM, Skip Lissiman OAM, John Longley AM, Brian Richardson OAM, Phil Smidmore OAM, Grant Simmer OAM and Hugh Treharne OAM, as well as reserves Will Baillieu OAM, Rob Brown OAM, Sir James Hardy OBE and Scott McAllister OAM.
Australian Sailing wishes to once again extend their sincerest congratulations to the aforementioned sailors as the entire nation celebrates their epic win and milestone.
