Published Fri 27 Sep 2024
Australians Scott and Phillipa Cavanough have taken to the waters off the coast of Brittany, France for the RORC 2024 Double Handed World Offshore Championships.
An initiative of World Sailing, the Offshore Double Handed World Championships has been established in recognition of the incredible growth of double handed offshore racing in recent years.
Co-hosted by Lorient Grand Large, RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) and Yacht Club de France, the inaugural event sees all teams take part in an overnight Elimination Series consisting of two groups, from which the first five boats in each group qualify for the Final Race. The winner of the Final, set to take place on 29 September, will be the 2024 Offshore Double Handed World Champion.
With a wind speed recorded at over 30 knots, the first elimination race of the Offshore Double Handed World Championship produced a high speed battle in full on conditions.
Eleven teams started the Département du Morbihan Race - Elimination Race One, which saw France 2, Uruguay, Belgium 1, Great Britain 1 and Canada awarded a place in the Final.
Scheduled to take part in the second elimination race which has been delayed due to low pressure systems, Scott and Phillipa, or ‘Team Bullitt’ as they are affectionately known, now await their turn.
With extensive offshore experience, the members of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron are sure to make Australia proud.
