Advance notice of Yachting Tasmania’s intention to voluntarily cancel its registration as an Incorporated Association
In 2016, Yachting Tasmania and all other Member Yachting Associations (MYA’s) agreed to move towards a new governance model under the banner of “One Sailing”. This was done to strengthen the national governance framework of the sport, reduce duplication, create more efficient management/ organisational structures and develop closer relationships with Clubs and Classes.
To facilitate this, the MYA’s transferred all staff to Australian Sailing (AS) who were responsible for day to day operations. An “Implementation Agreement” was signed between AS and all the MYA’s to ensure delivery of services.
From Yachting Tasmania’s perspective, this process has worked well and it is now ready to further modernise the structure. Members of the committee have consulted with the board of AS, other MYA’s and spoken to a number of clubs; and have come to the conclusion that Yachting Tasmania no longer needs to operate or exist as a separate entity.
The AS Constitution was amended at the Annual General Meeting held in October last year to allow for MYA’s to deregister or wind up and for clubs to become direct voting members of Australian Sailing. The changes had unanimous support of the MYA’s. NSW clubs recently went down this path and voted in December for Yachting NSW to cease to exist and be replaced by an Advisory Committee of AS.
There will be a briefing on the proposed changes at the Club conference on the 3rd August in advance of commencing the formal process as required by the YTAS constitution. The proposed change of structure should have minimal impact on clubs. It is intended to be a logical step in simplifying the governance framework of Sailing in Tasmania.
To ensure that your club hears all of the information to assist in making an informed decision, you are encouraged to have a representative attend the conference for this briefing. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either myself, members of the Yachting Tasmania committee or Glen Stanaway at Australian Sailing. The conference agenda and registration can be found here.
