Acting General Managers Update – April 2022

Published Thu 14 Apr 2022

Announcement

It is a real pleasure to announce that Ben Callard has been promoted to the new position of National General Manager – Club Support. Ben has worked for Australian Sailing and Yachting Queensland for almost 13 years and this promotion is a fitting acknowledgment for his work with and for the sailing community. Ben will join the Senior Leadership Team at Australian Sailing and will help guide the Support pillar of our new strategy with the aim to ensure that we are putting our clubs and classes at the centre of everything that we do.

Annie Watson will fulfil the General Manager – Queensland role in an acting capacity until 30 June. Annie has been a Club Support Officer in Queensland for more than three years and will guide the Queensland Team to deliver support to Queensland Clubs and Classes.

Club Survey

The club survey closes on April 24th at 5pm.  Please have your say.

The purpose of this survey is to seek direct insights from clubs, as well as what support they value from Australian Sailing. The survey also seeks feedback on Australian Sailing's recently released 10 year strategy.

This survey has been sent to the Primary Contacts at each affiliated club (as registered in revSPORT). You are encouraged to consult with your committee members to form a single response for your club. The survey has 11 questions should take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete. Responses to the survey will remain confidential.

Feedback will be aggregated and results will be communicated at this year’s club conferences as part of a facilitated session on strategic planning.

If you have misplaced the email with the survey link, please get in touch with any of the team, and they will resend it to you.

This year we are also adding a Building Excellence workshop for key members of the Discover Sailing Centres throughout Queensland (Principles, Administrators, Managers, Head Instructors or anyone else you think would benefit) . There will be plenty of opportunities for interaction, sharing, support and networking on relevant topics during the workshop. When you RSVP, there is a list of suggested topics to select your interest in or supply your own.

Not a Discover Sailing Centre yet?  Come along to the workshop to get a greater insight into what benefits and support you get from being a Discover Sailing Centre.

Please encourage all your instructors, coaches and Discover Sailing Centre key people to attend this key Queensland event.

Junior Sailing Festival

Dates 25th and 26th June

Register https://www.revolutionise.com.au/southportyc/events/135782/

The Junior Sailing festival is a new initiative and is being held at Southport Yacht Club Oxenford on 25th and 26th June.  This festival is aimed at children who are completing one of the Tackers courses, or equivalent, and can steer a boat by themselves.  The weekend includes plenty of games and fun and participants can choose to do one day or both.

Parents will have the opportunity to hear from Class Associations on buying second hand boats, club membership and volunteering options and gaining an understanding of the sport of sailing for juniors and youth (regattas and key events).

This event will be advertised on the AS Queensland Social media and directly to clubs.  Please mark this event in your calendar and encourage all your junior learn to sail & green fleet participants to attend. You can download the poster at the bottom of this update.

Event Planning Calendar

Have you done your 2022/23 racing calendar yet?  If you have, make sure you add your special events into the Queensland Event Planning Calendar.  You can find it here: https://www.sailing.org.au/qld/qld-events-calendar/

Class Associations use this calendar to help  make decisions about holding their events in conjunction with an already existing event or choose an area and club that is not busy on their preferred weekend.

This calendar is driven by you and for you, so please take the time to check the calendar and make any adjustments as necessary.

Please let us know if you have misplaced the link to add your events.

If you would like us to promote your event on our Social Media, please send an image either png or jpg, the entry link and any other relevant information to annie.watson@sailing.org.au

If you have any questions about these items or more, please contact one of our Queensland team members below.
