A Windrush Christmas

Published Wed 04 Dec 2019

It’s beginning to look at lot like a Windrush Christmas. The Shelley Sailing Club will host the 2020 Windrush 14 State Championships from December 28th, 2019. In its 44th year, sailors from as far away as Albany and Carnarvon congregate in Perth for the three-day event.

The club and its courses are known for tight, compact and action-packed racing on the Canning River and this year is no different. A fleet as old as the Windrush’s are there are long standing and fierce rivalries that resurface at this annual meet.

WA designed and manufactured, Windrush catamarans are a stable and forgiving multihull. They have a versatile configuration options for the lone sailor or team and are excellent for all ages from 12 to 70. Teams this year include duos of father-daughter, husband-wife, and grandfather-grandson, along with several sets of fathers and sons competing against each other. Which is particularly fierce.

The Shelley Sailing Club is one of WA’s smaller family focused clubs nestled in the sheltered banks of the Canning River. Since 1974 it has offered children’s sail training and racing on Sunday afternoons during the summer. Sailors who started at SSC include current Olympic Squad members Nia Jerwood and Caitlin Elks. Whether visiting for a weekend meal or looking from some Christmas cheer, Shelly Sailing Club is where I’ll be. Visit shelleysailingclub.wordpress.com
