Published Wed 20 Mar 2024
A sensational SheSails event was held on the River Derwent by the Derwent Sailing Squadron (DSS) on Saturday 2nd March.
The 2024 Frontline Mind – DSS 42 degrees South Women’s Regatta promised to be an exceptional event and definitely was with 105 women competing across 12 keelboats with 2 short races and a passage race to finish the day. The regatta demonstrated the commitment of the Squadron to promoting and supporting female participation in keelboat sailing and helping to create the largest women’s regatta ever held in Tasmania.

DSS Sailing Manager, Colleen Darcey, was impressed with the enthusiastic level of engagement from the competitors and is already planning for the next event.
“At the Squadron, we are committed to advancing female participation in keelboat sailing. The regatta stands as a beacon, showcasing our ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive environment within our sailing community. It’s a testament to our unwavering commitment to fostering an atmosphere that not only encourage but whole-heartly supports women in the sport of sailing,” Darcey said.
Weather conditions were challenging with shifty winds and varying breeze strengths, however, this added another dimension to the sailing with teams having to continually reassess their tactics and course.
There were many enthusiastic sailors supporting each other and sharing their knowledge making the event a competitive one, while also creating lasting connections and friendships.
Congratulations to all the participants and winners on the day for an outstanding effort.
