2022 YOUTH SAIL SA Youth Championships – Sailors coming together for a successful event

Published Fri 02 Dec 2022

58 boats from across South Australia and Tasmania and Victoria, came together for the 2022 Youth Sail SA Youth Championships at Largs Bay Sailing Club on 26th and 27th of November.

The event brought together young sailors in a range of classes including 420, Cadet, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Mirror, Open Skiff and Optimist fleets Open, Intermediate and Green.

Day 1 was looking to start well with all boats on the water preparing to start when the fleet was hit by 28 knot squalls.  All sailors and on-water support did an amazing job and made their way to shore to regroup and headed back out to the afternoon session of racing with one race getting in before the wind dropped out completely and racing abandoned for the day.

Day 2 looked good, and RO’s aimed to compete the series with seven races planned.  Well done to RO Marcus Cooper and Laura Hughson on the Open Course and Madeline Salter on the Green Course.

The event included the opportunity for Coaches and Instructors with Professional Development session hosted by Australian Sailings Ash Brunning and Brady Lowe.

Thank you to all the sailors from Largs Bay Sailing Club, Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club, Henley Sailing Club, Adelaide Sailing Club, Port Lincoln Yacht Club, Goolwa Aquatic Club, Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia, Sandringham Yacht Club, Sandy Bay Sailing Club and Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania all represented on the course as well as supported by local clubs to assist running the event.

Congratulation to Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club winner of the best overall score.

Finally, we extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers lined up to assist with the event – the 2022 Youth Sail Youth Championships would not be possible without you.
