Westsail and SunSmart WA Youth Championships wrap

Published Fri 04 Oct 2019

Westsail, presented by SunSmart, concluded on Tuesday, with 112 sailors involved in participation and performance level coaching over four days.

The Lasers, Optimist, Open Skiff, 29er and Nacra 15 fleets were hosted by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

Westsail 2019 exposed sailors to a range of experiences and conditions. The days commenced with a fitness session, followed by a mix of on-water and land-based theory and training. Sailors then debriefed with their coaches before dinner was served. Guest speakers were involved in the evening, speaking during and after dinner, before the sailors headed home for the night. This year’s speakers included physiologists, discussing training and fitness for sailing, a sports physio, international athletes and coaches.

The 2019 SunSmart WA Youth Championships followed Westsail, on Wednesday and Thursday.

A fleet of 114 Lasers, Optimists, Open Skiffs, 29ers, Nacra 15s and Bic Techno 293s competed on Freshwater Bay.

A full complement of races were completed, despite the lack of wind at times. Congratulations to all competitors, please CLICK HERE to view the final results.

Thanks to Race Officers John Taylor and Geoff Brown and the team of volunteers, both on the water and on-shore who ensured fair and safe racing for all and excellent canteen food.

Thank you to Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club for hosting both Westsail and the regatta and for the whole team’s assistance in welcoming and catering for our sailors in every aspect.

Australian Sailing WA is also grateful for the support of the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation and Healthway in making this event possible.
