SheSails X OptiChicks Weekend

Published Mon 07 Aug 2023

WSC is excited to host our WSC SheSails event in conjunction with the NSW IODA OptiChicks 2023 event! This is an event open to all sailors - focusing on keeping girls and women involved in the sport. Optimist sailors are encouraged to bring their own boats for opti specific sessions. Optimist Sailors are welcome to book for Saturday only if they are attending the NSW IODA Teams Racing day on day 2.

Goals

  • Give sailors the opportunity to share their love of the sport with the women and girls in their lives
  • Connect and meet other sailors across classes and age groups
  • Learn new skills
  • Try something different
  • Foster their passion for the sport of sailing

Program
The event is made up of 5 smaller sessions. Sailors are encouraged to join for all sessions below, but are welcome to book sessions individually to suit your schedule.

Session 1: Share your passion
(Saturday 23rd September 9am to 11:30am)
Bring along a friend or family member and take them for a sail in your own boat or one of our club boats and share with them your love for our sport. Make sure to register your guest here.

Session 2: Adventure Sail OR Opti Skills
(Saturday 23rd September 12:30pm to 3:30pm)
While our OptiChicks gather together with coaches for skills development in their own boats, join us heading out onto the harbour with an adventure sail and sight-seeing. Maybe even spot a dolphin or seal!

Session 3: Connect and Share
(Saturday 23rd September 4pm to 5:30pm)
Join us for afternoon tea, a short guest speaker speech (TBC) and get to know others in sailing

Session 4: Pathways
(Sunday 24th September 9am to 12pm)
Working with a variety of classes and volunteers this is an opportunity to try a different class of boat to what you are used to.

Session 5: Learn Something New
(Sunday 24th September 1pm to 4pm)
Sailing has a lot of different activities within the sport, and we believe that variety can be the key to maintaining a lifelong love of sailing. Join us for sessions on splicing and knots, boat care, powerboat skills, rules, race management, exercise and strength training, SUPing etc.

Who can come?
Everyone beyond learn to sail (eg. green adventure and above) is welcome to join us. While this is a SheSails event and focused on bringing and keeping more women and girls in sailing, we need the support of everyone to do that. All men and boys are welcome provided you support the goals of this event.

How much does the weekend cost?
$35 per person

In order to keep costs down we are keeping the weekend mostly self-catered and relying on permanent staff and volunteers. The price per person is to cover some of the costs of fuel, afternoon tea and materials for the sessions. If you are unable to make it but would like to support the cause, you can purchase a 'donation ticket' which will be used to improve what we can provide and ongoing event sustainability.

NSWIODA

WSC welcome NSWIODA and the female Optimist sailors for the 2023 OPTICHICKS event. Further detailed Optimist specific activities & events planned for Saturday 23rd September
