Sail Sydney 2021 – ready to hit the Harbour

Published Tue 07 Dec 2021

The 2021 Sail Sydney regatta is shaping up to provide quality sailing action with a large fleet of sailors keen to hit the water and compete after another disrupted year of racing.

From Thursday 9th December to Sunday 12th December, Woollahra Sailing club will host Sail Sydney with a number of classes using the event as their State and National titles due to the disruptions of COVID. With the NSW Youth Championship event cancelled due to lockdown, Sail Sydney will be the first opportunity in several months for NSW youth sailors to dust off and compete in a major regatta.

Sail Sydney remains a highlight event on the national racing calendar with this year’s event featuring a number of Performance Pathways Futures sailors, including Brooke Wilson (Laser Radial).

“We have all been training very hard alongside the Australian Sailing Team and Australian Sailing Squad athletes this year,” said Wilson. “Sail Sydney is one of our favourite events and we are all looking forward to racing.”

Foiling classes will be prominent with Nacra, Waszp and Windfoil all taking part in the 2021 regatta; providing a great platform for the training and development of the next generation of Australian Olympic sailing champions.

Australian Sailing Squad member Grae Morris (above) will return to defend his Sail Sydney 2020 1st place title in the Men’s Wind Foil.

Sail Sydney will also be hosting Wing Foil exhibition racing on 11 - 12 December straight after racing has been completed for the Wind Foil and Technos, more details are outlined in the Notice of Race.

Rio Gold Medallist and Australian Sailing team member Tom Burton will compete in the 49er with crew Simon Hoffman, the pair will have fierce competition with Australian Sailing Squad duos Tom Needham & Joel Turner from QLD and Jack Ferguson & Max Paul of NSW also competing.

A strong fleet of 29ers is always well supported with newcomers Joel Beashel and Logan Radford attending plus Tyler Dransfield and Jamie Stodart who have been sailing together for a while, ready to battle it out on Sydney Harbour.

Competitor, volunteer and support boat registration are now open with the late fee waivered this year at Sail Sydney. For more information visit the Sail Sydney Website.
