Sabres Hit the Water

Published Wed 18 Sep 2019

With their highly distinctive and recognisable red tipped sails, the Sabre Class are having a training day on September 21 at the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club. The Sabre class has been experiencing a resurgence of membership recently with many female sailors joining the fleet ready for the summer season. The Sabre is a single-handed dinghy and suits sailors from 18 to 80 years old. They have fleets across Australia with over 150 in Victoria alone. PDSC and Maylands Yacht Club are the home of Sabres in WA.

The training day will be conducted by former Victorian Sabre Sailor and National Champion, Brien Hennessey, assisted by our own WA experienced sailors. The aim of the day is to encourage our newer and less experienced sailors to improve their technique, skills and handling of their boat.

It’s not all about sailing though, the social aspect includes a meet and greet for members to banter and build rivalries around a BBQ lunch supplied by the Sabre Association volunteers. Sights are set on the National Championships at Wallaroo Sailing Club in South Australia early next year. PDSC sailor Tony Carr will join an expected fleet of 60 yachts in his brand-new Sabre to better his third overall at last year’s event. More information sabre.org.au or Sabres WA on Facebook.
