Olympians compete in Sailing Carnival

Four Perth based members of Australia’s 2021 Olympic sailing team will be competing in the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation - Goolugatup Sailing Carnival.


Olympic representatives Matt Wearn and his fiancé Emma Plasschaert will be competing in the 29er Fleet. Joining them will be Nia Jerwood & Monique De Vries who have qualified to be the Australian representatives in the 470 Women’s Class at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and will also be sailing in the highly competitive 29er to keep their skills razor sharp.


Mara Stransky, another Olympic representative will be competing in the Laser Radial competition during the Goolupatup Carnival.


Under 17 World champions in the Flying Fifteen class Axel Fleet and Kieran Buckin will also be racing.

“It is a packed program,” said Rear Commodore and carnival organiser Stephen Grover. “We start with the 29ers and Skiffs. The State championships for the Optimist class happen from January 9 – 11 and then the youth and junior competition starts.”


Other world champions competing in the 10-day sailing event include Michael Compton and  two time world champion in the Flying Fifteen and Vipers class Nick Jerwood.


“There are also demonstration sports happening as well so there’s lots to see on the Swan River this summer.”

 
The carnival has attracted 140 nominations from all over Western Australia. It replaces the National Youth championships that had to be cancelled due to Covid. Competition continues until January 14.
