Internationals Downunder

Published Thu 20 Jun 2019

Dating back to 1931 the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club has a renowned history with the International 14 fleet and has hosted several state and national championships over the years, they’re at it again in 2019 and 2020. Club and class legend Bill Devine secured their one and only world championship in 1979. Will there be another 20 years on in 2019-2020?

Recent i14 Worlds in Richmond, California USA in 2018 saw over 60 boats compete and the fleet has grown in popularity since then.

Tradition dictates that the meet kicks off with Teams Racing consisting of four boats each.

Raced over two days, this style of event dates back about 100 years and is full of strategy, tactics and outright mayhem for judges and sailors alike.

Iconic for flat water and stiff breezes, Perth waters and the spectacular Australian Summer will not disappoint. Originally with timber hulls and rigs from the 1900’s, these carbon fibre, slimed down rockets have evolved with the times to now use trapeze and foiling rudders.

A huge following in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the USA, this class is truly international as the name implies. Over six months out, some local sponsors have offered generous accommodation deals for the visiting international sailors.

The i14 Worlds has amazing marketing and advertising packages available for sponsors of the event if you’re looking to do something to offset the tax man and the imminent end of financial year.

Teams racing runs from Sunday, December 29, 2019 till New Year’s Eve. The World Championships begin Thursday, January 2, 2020 and conclude Friday January 10, 2020. Visit i14worlds2020.com or facebook.com/i14Worlds2020/
